Media Contact: Joshua Steele Kelly, [email protected]

Waterford, CT- On Tuesday, November 3rd, the Green Party far exceeded expectations of the voters of Waterford by winning their first seat in the town government and attracting as many as 1,179 votes in the various races. The Green Party ran a total of five candidates in the Waterford municipal election this year: Billy G. Collins (Board of Selectmen), Kevin Kelly (Board of Education), Baird Welch-Collins (RTM D2), Deb Roselli Kelly (RTM D3), and Joshua Steele Kelly (Zoning Board Alternate).

Billy Collins and Kevin Kelly both attracted approximately 6% of the total number of votes cast, and Kevin Kelly saw almost ¼ of all electors include him in their vote, totaling over 1,100 votes. Deb Roselli Kelly and Baird Welch-Collins received 7.62% and 11.71% of the vote, respectively. At just 20 years old, Joshua Steele Kelly became the youngest elected official in the Town of Waterford on Tuesday, winning his race with over 700 votes.

“This is an incredible triumph for the Waterford Green Party” said Kelly, also one of the co-chairs of the Waterford Green Party. “This election has proven to the public that a vote for a third party is not a “throw-away”, and that the Green Party is already on its way to gaining the support it needs to become a strong voice in the town government. We know that we have hundreds of supporters around town, and we hope that these supporters will join us in future elections to strengthen the Green slate on the ballot, and to better mobilize voters to support our issue-oriented campaigns.”

The Green Party this year ran on a platform that highlighted five central themes: Transparency, Education, Infrastructure, Ecology, and Fair Economics. Members of the Party believe that their issue-oriented focus can be refreshing to those who are tired of personal politics, and they believe it contributed to the strong showing for the Green Party at the polls on November 3rd.

“The next step for the Waterford Green Party is to expand our membership and find people that are willing to run for office as Greens” said Kelly. “We need to find more people that are committed to adding a third perspective to Waterford’s government, and we hope that voters will consider joining us at events, meetings, and on the ballot in the months and years to come.”
