The Waterford, CT Green Party (WGP) is pleased with Waterford High School’s decision to desegregate the sexes at the high school graduation process. Separating the students into groups of two sexes at such an important moment in their lives not only reinforces the antiquated idea that sexes are inherently separate and unequal, but it also divides friends apart at an important moment in their lives and suggests that members of each biological sex should conform to a societal standard. The Waterford, CT Green Party proudly supports the decision of each individual to act like and identify with any gender they feel most comfortable with, and supports the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in the Brown v. Board of Education that reaffirms that separate is inherently unequal. The Party would also like to commend the administration at WHS, including Principal Andre Hauser, for making concerted efforts to listen to the attitudes and assertions of the student body, as well as the students for voicing their opinions on the subject. The WGP encourages both the students and the administration to continue this pattern of student involvement in the community and hopes that the Waterford Board of Education realizes the importance of student and public participation in major decisions. We encourage the Board of Ed. to add an official student representative to serve on the Board as a non-voting member and represent the student body.
